Robin Whitley – Moving up the Career Ladder
In May 1979, Robin graduated from A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, and after working as an office manager for Moore’s Building Supplies, she accepted a job as a shift supervisor for Pillotex in 1986. Responsible for over 80 employees, her duties included general supervisory responsibilities, safety, training, disciplinary actions and quality control. In 2003 Pillowtex shut its doors and closed all operations. After 17 years of loyal hard working devotion Robin was out of a job.
Not knowing where to turn, Robin attended some information sessions offered by the JobLink Career Centers and the Centralina Workforce Development Board. She received support to enroll in Stanly Community College and change careers to the medical field. Less than two years after Robin enrolled in the program, she graduated with her new marketable skills in a very high demand health care industry.
“The Centralina JobLink staff was very supportive. The training program was helpful to me, and I probably would never have done this on my own!”, said Robin.
Wayne Ingram – Motivated to Return to School
Wayne Ingram beat the odds of becoming a high school drop out, which plagues over 30 percent of our youth across the nation. Upset by peer pressure and thoughts of suicide, Wayne enrolled with the Stanly County Youth Life Path Program, a proud partner of the Centralina Workforce Development Board, to acquire his GED and enroll in truck driving school. On the night of his graduation, Wayne spoke to other young people. "I quit school because people made fun of me and I was tired of the people who would not stop teasing me. Suicide was the biggest thing I had to overcome. Then, I started thinking, why am I quitting when I have overcome so many things? So, I went back to school and after five weeks I am doing better than ever."
