Centralina Youth Services Summit a Great Success!

On September 14, 2007 the Centralina Workforce Development Board and the Centralina Youth Council held its first annual State of the Region Youth Services Summit at the Speedway Club at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord.

The Summit had over 70 participants that were welcomed by David Hollars, Executive Director of the Centralina Workforce Development Board, Bob VanGorden Centralina Workforce Development Board Chair and Carol Johnson Centralina Youth Council Chair.

Attendees were also given a motivation talk by Thomas Barksdale II. Thomas Barksdale II is a motivational speaker and is the author of "It's All About You, A Young Adult's Guide to Positive Living." He also works as a partner with many of the Centralina Workforce Development Board’s Youth agencies.

Participants attended workshops that included “Digging for Gold: Tips for Successfully Searching for and Securing Grant Money”, “Make Me Marketable! How the Career Readiness Certification Can work for Youth!”, “There’s a lot to Learn About Money”, and “What’s Next for Me? Find out what there is out there for Youth after school.” Workshop presenters represented Central Piedmont Community College, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, The Federal Reserve Bank, and the R3 Center. During lunch the group heard an informative presentation from guest speaker Lakeshia Liphford from Job Corps who gave some tips on recruiting and retaining youth in the region.

In the afternoon session, attendees were able to hear from a panel that represented youth agencies in every county in the Centralina region. The panel discussed best practices that worked in their area with youth, especially in serving out-of-school youth. Summit participants were given the chance to ask the panel questions.

The first annual State of the Region Youth Services Summit was a great success! The Centralina Workforce Development Board and the Centralina Youth Council would like to thank all of those who participated and hopes that the information given will help agencies reach the youth in the region. Survey results from the Summit will be added to the Centralina WDB website (www.centralinaworks.com) within the next few weeks. Building A Better Workforce for Stanly County

Career Readiness Task Force Created

A group of public agencies, private businesses, and industry in Stanly County have joined together to create the Career Readiness Task Force. The task force will be looking at ways to enhance the county’s workforce.

The task force was created in the wake of the Stanly County Economic Summit, which was held in the spring. Leaders from Stanly Community College, Stanly County Schools, Stanly County Chamber of Commerce, Stanly County Economic Development Commission, and the Centralina Workforce Development Board began meeting to discuss ways the organizations could work together to promote workforce development in the county.

“We all thought one message that came out loud and clear from the summit was the need for a well trained workforce if we are going to attract business and industry and enhance the local economy,” Stanly Community College (SCC) President Dr. Michael Taylor said.

The task force is made up of representatives from private business and industry, Stanly Regional Medical Center, Pfeiffer University, Stanly JobLink Career Center, and David Hollars, Executive Director of the Centralina Workforce Development Board. School Superintendent Dr. Sam DePaul, Economic Development Commission Director Robert Van Geons, Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Tom Ramesur and Dr. Taylor called the task force together.

The group will sponsor several different events including a series of summer camps, that Stanly Community College and Pfeiffer University will sponsor next summer to introduce middle school students to various career opportunities in the county; work with public schools on a program for school counselors to visit local business and industry to see first-hand the career opportunities that exist in the county; and provide programs at school PTO/PTA meetings to let parents know about Stanly County career opportunities for their children.

The Centralina Workforce Development Board is proud to partner with everyone involved in the Stanly County Career Readiness task force. A well prepared workforce in the region is job one for the Centralina Workforce Development Board. Home Protection Program Expands to 61 Counties

Home Protection Pilot Program Adds 35 Counties to its Program

North Carolinians who have lost their jobs maybe able to save their homes from foreclosure thanks to a $1.5 million appropriation in the new state budget. The funds will allow the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency and local counseling organizations to expand the Home Protection Pilot Program from 26 to 61 counties. Iredell and Stanly counties are among the new service counties added.

The General Assembly created the Home Protection Pilot Program in 2004 to help workers who lost their jobs as the result of plant closings and other changing economic conditions. So far, it has helped more than 200 families pay their mortgage while they seek jobs or retrain for new ones. Another 300 homeowners have received foreclosure counseling or stays of foreclosure.

“Without this program, many families would have lost their homes,” said the Housing Finance Agency’s Executive Director Bob Kucab. “It provides the only financial help that is available in the state for families who face foreclosure as the result of plant closings.”

Five of the seven Centralina Workforce Development Board’s counties are now covered. For information in those counties please contact:

  • Anson County – Sandhills Community Action Program, Inc. – 910-947-5675
  • Cabarrus, Iredell, and Stanly counties – Prosperity Unlimited – 704-933-7405
  • Rowan County – Salisbury Community Development Corporation – 704-638-2154

Qualifying homeowners can receive zero-interest loans up to $20,000. The loans can be used to either bring a mortgage current or to keep a mortgage current for up to 18 months while the homeowner participates in an approved retraining program. Repayment is deferred for 15 years, unless the home is sold, refinanced or is no longer the principal resident of the owner.

For more information on how you can qualify please contact the correct agency in your county. For assistance with this please contact Emily Barnes at (704) 348-2732 or by email at ebarnes@centralina.org.

Office Land Selected in Lincoln County

Lincoln County Identifies 900 Acres of Land for Office Development

Lincoln County has identified for the first time almost 900 acres of eastern Lincoln land where corporate office development is now encouraged to set up shop.

“For the first time…the county has said through a process that they now see a future for office development in east Lincoln, said Barry Matherly, executive director for Lincoln Economic Development Association (LEDA), a group that encourages economic growth in the county. “We are not walking away from manufacturing, but rather building economic diversity with office development.”

With land already being cleared for a new health complex for Carolina’s Medical Center and a new YMCA, more land was recently donated that has been designated for as many as three office buildings. Options for the complexes include anywhere from 160,000 and 280,000 square feet total of building space on the multi-story buildings with parking.

Office development would not only add jobs, but could mean tangible quality of life changes for residents throughout the county and especially in the east through high paying jobs and shorter commutes.

Matherly stated that LEDA would be in charge of the recruitment and foreseeing the development as right for back-office call-centers or accounting operations, and a regional or district arm of a larger corporation.

“It’s like anything else we do, you have to start with the thought, then it takes years to build momentum behind it to change people’s attitudes about it,” Matherly said.

The Centralina Workforce Development Board is proud to partner with Lincoln Economic Development Association to help encourage the region to continue to expand.

New Emergency Facility May Open in Kannapolis

Carolinas Medical Center – NorthEast Seeking State Approval

Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast has applied for state approval to build a $17.2 million freestanding emergency department at Interstate 85 and Lane Street.

The proposed 23,973-square-foot facility would include 10 treatment bays, two observation beds, imaging (CT, ultrasound, and X-rays), laboratory and pharmacy operations to support emergency services, according to the certificate of need application hospital offices filed with the state. Carolinas Medical Center officials hope the branch would open by October 1, 2009.

Expanding the emergency department is part of CMC-NorthEast’s 2015 Plan, a 10-year master facility plan completed earlier this year. Planning for the expansion was expedited after patient volumes continued to exceed projections, with fiscal year 2006 visits increasing by nearly 7 percent.

“This project presents dual opportunities,” Mark Nantz, chief administrative officer of CMC-NorthEast, said. “For our patients in and around Kannapolis, it makes emergency care much more accessible. For the medical center, it decompresses capacity constraints on our main campus, so that we can continue to grow and efficiently serve more patients.”

Cabarrus is Making a Splash!

A $140 Million Water Park and Resort Picks Concord as its Home

Great Wolf Resorts has decided to make a $140 million splash in Concord. The Wisconsin based company announced September 21, 2007 that it plans to build its indoor water park and resort in the Concord.

John Cox, the Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation chief executive officer said the attraction would help Cabarrus bring in more people year-round, along with the influx of visitors for racing-related events at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The resort will generate $68 million in annual visitor spending.

Great Wolf’s plans call for a 409 room hotel as part of a 465,597 square foot complex. Earlier estimates had called for a $100 million investment, but Cox said he understood the figure will be about $140 million.

Great Wolf has said it plans to start construction late this year and build the facility in 18 months. The resort and water park will go on a 37 acre site off Speedway Boulevard near Weddington Road.

Carolinas Medical Center – Union has received the 2007 Hospital of Choice Award from the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers (AAHCP) for the third consecutive year. The awards are given annually to hospitals and other healthcare facilities that provide the very best customer service to patients and their families.

“It’s an honor to continue to be recognized alongside some of the nation’s most prestigious healthcare facilities, such as Johns Hopkins University Hospital and the Mayo Clinic,” said John Sulllivan, interim chief executive office of CMC-Union. “CMC-Union is actively committed to providing the very best customer service to our patients and their families. This award serves as a tribute to our excellent employees and physicians.”

CMC-Union was one of eight hospitals in North Carolina to receive this award. Only 100 hospitals nationwide received a 2007 Hospital of Choice Award.

Literacy on the Move

Literacy Council of Union County Celebrates International Literacy Day and New Location

International Literacy Day was September 8, 2007 and city and county officials in Monroe celebrated that day with the opening of a new downtown Monroe headquarters for the Literacy Council of Union County.

The non-profit group provides one-on-one lessons to illiterate adults through the county, but it has been in the process of moving from its offices at South Piedmont Community College.

Linda Moyer, executive director for the Literacy Council and Centralina Workforce Development Board Workforce Readiness Committee member, said the group’s new 2,500 square foot office at the corner of Jefferson and Hayne Streets offers more than triple the space at their previous office.

“This is a great opportunity for us to expand the program,” Moyer said, adding she has already seen an increase in walkable traffic afforded by the more visible location.

Moyer was one of the co-founders of the Council in March 1998, and since then it has grown to include 80 volunteers tutoring approximately 125 adults.

The Centralina Workforce Development Board is a proud partner with the Literacy Council of Union County. The Board believes that a literate workforce leads to a well prepared workforce. Lowe’s + JobLink Career Center = Qualified Workers

Statesville JobLink Career Center Holds Mini JobFair for Lowe’s

The Statesville JobLink Career Center recently hosted a Lowe’s Mini Job Fair. Interested applicants came to the JobLink Career Center on September 11, 2007 from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm and were able to meet with the employer and apply for open positions.

JobLink staff assisted interested customers with completing their on-line application after Jane Moore from Lowe’s had spoken with each applicant personally.

Lowe’s felt that the JobFair was very successful and found many possible candidates for the positions they were hiring for. Another positive factor from the JobFair is that JobLink staff are now educated on the hiring process for Lowe’s. Iredell County JobLink Career Center staff members are much more aware of the criteria needed by candidates for the desired positions and can begin preparing applicants for the next job fair to be held in the near future.

The Centralina Workforce Development Board and the Statesville JobLink Career Center are proud to offer their business services to local employers, and are happy to connect them with the great workforce in the region. A popular Indian Trail sub sandwich shop has taken the number one slot in the restaurant chain’s online customer satisfaction survey.

The Quizno’s located at 5880 East Highway 74 in Indian Trail, owned by Rita and Mark Forcelledo, was ranked sixth in the nation back in July, but Rita and her staff were bound and determined to please the customer right into the number one rank.

On August 31st the store achieved its goal and ousted a Quizno’s that had been holding steady at number one for weeks, making their shop the best in the nation out of hundreds of other Quizno’s.

The store will get a nod in the corporate newsletter and has received cash as well as some movie tickets, but Forcelledo said that the prizes are only cake.

“The biggest prize is that recognition,” said Forcelledo, who emphasized that it is the customers who really deserve the kudos.

Did you know that this business was number one in the nation for customer satisfaction? Do you think your neighbor knows? Pass the good word on and share the accomplishments of our region!

New Website for Iredell-Statesville Schools

Iredell-Statesville Schools’ website has a fresh face. The district did away with the former website that was created in 1997 and went live with a newly updated and more interactive website recently.

The new, improved and very colorful website pops with bright new colors. It even bears a new school system slogan, “Igniting a Passion for Learning,” in place of “We Open Tomorrow’s Eyes.” The school district wanted to open the new school year with an inviting and user-friendly site.

“The design has been the same for a number of years, so we wanted to continue to move forward,” Public Relations Director Dawn Creson said. “We’ve updated the look and reorganized the information in a more logical way.”

The system will continue to make changes and tweak the new website in the coming months based on user comments. In order to create the most sensible site, the district had to pay attention to their target audiences and worked from there.

“We had to make it user-friendly for employees, community members, parents and those looking to move to the area,” she said.

So why not check out their site for yourself? You can do so by visiting the website at http://iss.schoolwires.com. Be sure to explore the entire site and to offer any suggestions on how to improve it!

Kannapolis City Schools has New Slogan and Logo

Kannapolis City Schools has adopted a new slogan and logo this year that aligns with the billion-dollar North Carolina Research Campus under construction in Kannapolis.

Creating the future” will replace “Kids can succeed.”

“Creating the future is what we do every day in Kannapolis City Schools,” said Community Relations Director Ellen Boyd. The slogan also ties in with the “Celebrate the Future” billboards around town promoting the North Carolina Research Campus.

Kannapolis City Schools enlisted A.L. Brown High School alumna, Martha Walters to design a logo around the theme. School officials said the logo represents growth and ties in well with the biotechnology focus of the research campus.

“It’s important for any organization to have a uniformed look, but it’s especially important with all changes taking place in Kannapolis,” Boyd said.

Kannapolis City Schools has also given is website (www.kannapolis.k12.nc.us) a cleaner look, as well as adding to its functionality. The website now has a search function and allows users to subscribe to html or text emails. Events and news serve as the primary content on the homepage with photos linking to each school’s individual site along the right side of the page.
